BEC商务英语 / 第十章 Unit 10 Business Meetings / 第3节 Dialogue 3 An Internal Meeting
提要与知识

(Situation: The human resources department of Powerland Co. is going to offer a computer training course for the staff. The training manager Jackson, is having a meeting with his colleagues, Fiona, Tiffiny and Stephen)

场景:公司部门经理办公室   人物: Jackson、Stephen、Tiffiny、Fiona

Jackson : Thank you all for coming together today. I believe you all know that we have been taking about offering computer training to our staff. We still have several things to decide first before we inform each department.

Stephen: Yes, I think it would be a good news for most of the staff. As we know, many staff are not quite skillful in using Excel, Power point or even sending e-mails, which has affected the efficiency of work to some extent. But the question is, we cannot train so many staff at one time.

Jackson: Yes, I have thought about that.I am thinking there will be three sessions. We’ll train 4 to 5 staff members from each department at a time. That means we can train about 35 people each time, and almost all them can have the chance. They can sign up for the class themselves which would be on “First come, first served” basis.

Tiffiny: When are we going to have the training and how long is each training?

Jackson: What about starting from July 6th and three weeks for a session?

Tiffiny: Three weeks might be a bit short, how about 4 weeks?

Fiona:  Four weeks might be very ideal, but we have to take cost into consideration. If it lasts too long, the cost will raise up and it might be a bit difficult for us to afford.

Jackson: Yes, that is a problem. So if we have two hours each day and four days a week, then we would have 24 hours a session for 3 weeks. That would be enough to learn some basic skills in operating computer. And each session can start from the first Monday of each month, what do you think?

Tiffiny: I agree. It's the 15th of May today. The first session starts from next month.

Fiona: That’s OK.

Jackson: The next question is the teacher. If we invite a teacher from college, the cost would be too high. Can we ask the engineer in the Information Department to give the training?

Stephen: Of course, if one teacher gives all the classes, that would be too much workload. We can have a teacher from Guangzhou University and maybe an engineer from our own company.

Tiffiny:  I think Stephen's idea is acceptable. Do we have to consider the fee? Will staff pay for their training?

Jackson: I have calculated that it will be about 800 yuan per person. It is decided that since this is an on-job training, the company will pay two-thirds of the tuition and staff themselves will pay one third.

Fiona: That sounds good, but how about those staff who are unwilling to pay?

Tiffiny: If some staff really have financial difficulties, we should provide some help. We should have budgets for this purpose even though it's not a big sum.

Stephen: I agree. I think we should also need to consider the content of the course. We can have teachers to decide the content and the material to use.

Tiffiny: But we have to understand that university teachers have different focus of teaching. We also need to consider our staff’s needs. It is better to ask some staff what they hope to learn and then discuss with teachers.

Fiona: That’s a good point. This will actually make the class more attractive.

Jackson: Good, OK, so far we have decided the participants, the time, the teacher, tuition and the content. Now the last question will be who is responsible for organizing the training?

Stephen: I think if you don’t mind, I will do it.

Jackson: Yeah, that’s really nice. You can send a memo to each department and ask them to give you the name before May 25th. The company will provide the classroom and lap-top computers. Since you once worked there in college, Fiona, will you help to contact teachers in college?

Fiona: Sure, I can do that.

Jackson: Good! Ok, we have got it settled , I think, up to now. If anything occurs, we’ll discuss later. Good luck.
