Joe is the manager of the Human Resources Department of a logistics company. He is giving a training course to new employees, Ava, Mike, Josh and others.
Dialogue 2
Joe: Good morning, everybody. Welcome to our company!
All: Good morning, sir
Joe: I’m Joseph Johnson. But just call me Joe. Now I’m going to give you an Orientation Training.
Ava: Joe, I’m not a graduate of logistics, so I know little about the subject.
Joe: Well, modern logistics is one of the most challenging and exciting areas in the world. I think you’ll find it interesting.
Ava: What is the origin of logistics?
Joe: Logistics is considered to have originated in the military's needs for supplies.
Josh: So it is very important.
Joe: Sure. It encompasses transport organization, army replenishments and material maintenance.
Josh: But I understand that the concept of logistics is now mainly used in the business world.
Joe: That’s true. While the terms of logistics can be defined in several ways, the business concept is most well known. The business-planning framework for the management of materials, services, information and capital flows, including the increasingly complex information, communication and control systems is required in today’s business environment.
Mike: The job sounds highly demanding and appealing to me. However, my major is computer science.
Joe: Never mind. We value diversity. That’s why we recruit a variety of people from all occupations for the management of logistics. Of course, it’s important that persons involved in day-to-day work of logistics have a basic understanding of it.
Mike: What is the objective of logistics management then?
Joe: The overall goal of logistics is to achieve a targeted level of customer service at the lowest possible cost.
Mike: I see.
